HMY Yacht Sales sold an 84-foot 2007 Lazzara at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and has several deals brewing on new boats, according to HMY general manager Tom Sanders.

“Across the board — meaning new boats and brokerage — we had good activity,” Sanders told Trade Only Today. “The show was very encouraging in regard to new-boat sales activity, which has been largely absent for the last five years. The show was a breakthrough, compared to the last couple years. Brokerage was good. Brokerage was strong.”

The Palm Beach show, which was held March 22-25, ranks as one of the top 10 boat shows in the nation, with more than $350 million worth of boats, yachts and accessories on display. More megayachts were shown this year because 40 in-water slips were added at Palm Harbor Marina at the show’s north end.

The Lazzara deal was negotiated and structured on the same day the buyer stepped aboard the yacht, Sanders said. “We have other brokerage activity going on, but that was certainly out of the blue and unexpected — and representative of how we thought the show went,” he said. “Our overall presence at the show made a difference, certainly.”

HMY represents Viking, Maritimo, Grand Banks, Princess and Tiara. It had nearly 100 new and brokerage boats from 31 to 162 feet at the show — the most by one exhibitor in Show Management’s history of producing boat shows.

“That is a big achievement and an amazing vote of confidence for us,” Show Management CEO Efrem “Skip” Zimbalist said during a press conference on the show’s opening day.

HMY’s effort paid off, according to Sanders. “Having such a large presence at the show caused people to stop and work with our people,” Sanders said. “They saw so many boats and so many different opportunities that they stopped and did business with us. We put virtually every new boat we have in stock and every trade-in into this show. On top of that, we worked with our brokerage owners to get as many of those boats as we could to the show. We are talking about boats from $150,000 to $36.9 million.”

HMY’s success was indicative of the show’s overall solid performance, Show Management vice president and COO Andrew Doole said.

“It was a very good show,” Doole said. “We were up in attendance. We were up in the number of exhibitors, compared to last year, and the weather was almost perfect throughout the weekend. So we had a great event.”

Small-boat dealers and manufacturers, such as Dragonfly Boatworks of Vero Beach, Fla., also reported sales and healthy sales activity, Sanders said.

“We saw the start of the improvements at the [Yacht & Brokerage Show in Miami Beach],” Doole said. “There was increased sales activity there, so we went into Palm Beach hoping for the same, and that is certainly what happened. People have the desire, and we’re hoping now more will have the confidence to pull the trigger and buy the boat.”

This year’s expansion into Palm Harbor Marina, which added more big-boat inventory, contributed to the show’s success, Doole said. Show Management is looking forward to further growth at the 2013 show, and Doole reports that some brokers have committed to increasing their displays at next year’s event.

C1 Bank will be the new name for Community Bank & Co., effective May 1.

The new name indicates that the bank puts customers and community first, said Trevor Burgess, chief executive officer of CBM Florida Holding Co., parent company of the bank.

It also differentiates the bank from the nearly two dozen other Florida banks with “community” in their names, he said.

Signage at the bank’s 18 offices will change on May 1, the same day the bank expects to close on its acquisition of The Palm Bank, which also will take on the C1 Bank name. Florida bank regulators have OK’d the Palm Bank acquisition, which is pending approval from federal regulators, Burgess said.

The bank, headquartered in Lakewood Ranch and originally Community Bank of Manatee, adopted the Community Bank & Co. name in February 2011, shortly before it acquired First Community Bank of America in Pinellas Park.

Community Bank & Co. had $729.3 million in total assets as of Dec. 31. The bank lent more than $181 million last year to local families and businesses, said Katie Pemble, president. It reported net income of $5.6 million in 2011, compared to a net loss of $1.3 million in 2010, before it was recapitalized by CBM Florida.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Attendance on the first day of the Palm Beach International Boat Show increased 23 percent and exhibitor revenue was up 5 percent, compared with last year, according to Show Management, organizers of the event.

“The West Palm Beach show is building to be a very strong show for boats 60 feet and up,” Show Management CEO Efrem “Skip” Zimbalist said. “At this show we have the biggest single display by one exhibitor we’ve ever had, period — and that is HMY Yachts, which has over 50 boats here.”

And there’s a good reason for that. When show-goers come to the Palm Beach event, many are ready to buy, said Mike Strassel of HMY Yachts.

“It might be one of the best-attended shows by actual buyers,” Strassel said. “We chose to make our largest display here at the Palm Beach show because buyers, after attending Fort Lauderdale and attending Miami and narrowing down their searches, will come here and close deals. We do a lot of business at this show and it is an important part of our yearly sales program.”

HMY represents four brands: Viking, Tiara, Maritimo and Grand Banks. It has 51 new boats and 37 used boats from 31 to 164 feet at the show. “An important part of our marketplace is our brokerage, and it’s the new sales that fuel our brokerage,” Strassel said.

Overall at the show, the number of boats — both new and used —100 feet and larger is up 35 percent and the number of boats 80 to 100 feet has increased 29 percent, according to Show Management.

In March 2010, the Palm Beach show was the first to show signs of growth after a couple of years of declines in boat sales and exhibitor participation, Zimbalist said.

“Since then, every show that AIM has held has been better than the previous show in terms of exhibitor participation and attendance,” Zimbalist said. “We had a slight dip in Fort Lauderdale in November [2011] because of the deluge of rain. Otherwise, everything has pointed up. The growth hasn’t been dramatic or double-digit, but it has been good, steady growth in terms of attendance and exhibitor participation.”

Builders of smaller boats were also excited to be in West Palm Beach. “The West Palm Beach show really caters to the clientele interested in our type of boat,” said David R. Cherubini, president and CEO of Cherubini Yachts in Delran, N.J., which builds yacht tenders, including a 25-foot sport cruiser that is debuting at the show. “We’ve done the show for quite a few years. The West Palm Beach show has always been a winner for us. We have a lot of friends in the area and a lot of clients here who have purchased our products here.”

With aisles loaded with show-goers, exhibitors inside the accessories tent were upbeat. The event seems to get stronger every year, said Michael O’Connor, customer service representative for Atlantic Marine Electronics of Riviera Beach, Fla.

“It’s the first day, but the crowd is looking really good,” O’Connor said. “We’re hoping it is a great show for us. The economy is looking better and the stock market, so we’re hoping everyone has a prosperous show.”

Minto Communities Florida recently retained ULA to assist with the strategic marketing and advertising for four of its Florida communities.

Since January, the Agency has helped Minto embark on new creative campaigns for its age-targeted communities in both Sun City Center (Tampa Bay Area) and Town Park at Tradition (Port St. Lucie). In addition, the Agency is assisting with a new creative campaign and critical sales path strategy for Minto’s Harbour Isle community, located on Anna Maria Sound in Bradenton, Florida.

Deploying a combination of both traditional and online media, along with enhancements to each community’s critical sales path, Minto has already seen an increase in both sales traffic and net sales in 2012.
