CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — A small Florida bank took a swipe at larger rival institutions and their newly announced fees Tuesday by offering to actually pay new customers who open checking accounts. Community Bank & Company, with 17 locations in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, said that every new customer who opens a checking account with direct deposit will receive $5 per month for a year. “We needed to do something to help consumers who are under attack from behemoth national banks charging fees that just don’t make sense,” said Katie Pemble, Community’s president, in announcing the offer. “People have a choice of where to bank and at Community Bank we thought paying people $5 per month rather than charging them $5 per month was a good way to set us apart.” The move comes after Bank of America’s controversial decision to begin charging $5 a month to people who use their debit cards.
